Learning objectives:

Children should learn:

  • to be able to use existing well known mnemonics as an aid to memory for learning regularly mis-spelled words
  • to invent their own mnemonics to learn particular spelling patterns
  • to use mnemonics to learn irregular spelled words
  • to gain an insight into how words are put together

Suggested activities:

  • Get the children to look through their writing and find words they have spelled incorrectly on a regular basis.
  • Make a list of these words and devise mnemonics for them.
  • Leave it a week and then let the children go into response partners to test themselves.
  • Did they manage to remember them?
  • Get the children to devise mnemonics for particular spelling patterns e.g. -ight words, -ough words, -ed words.
  • Encourage the children to devise mnemonics for spelling lists for younger children.
  • Make an anthology of their newly invented mnemonics.
