1 O vas-tu en vacances et qu'est-ce que tu fais?
Where do you go on holiday and what do you do?

oiseauHolidays are an important part of modern day life.  We like to get away from the daily traffic jams and din to somewhere more peaceful.  Nowhere is this more so than in a big city like Paris where most of the people have their roots in the countryside. France is a big and varied enough country for people not to need to leave it-most people stay on French soil when they go away.

?Read Alain's account in Reference 1 of his yearly summer stay at his grand-parents' farm in the Corrze in southern France.  He does this every year so is using the present tense of nearly all the verbs.  When he is talking about what he himself does he uses the je part of the verb, je vais -I go, je retrouve-I meet,  j'aime- I like, je rentre- I go home.  When he is talking about what he and his friends or family do  he use on meaning we as in on habite-we live, on met- we put, on peut faire -we can do... When he refers to his parents, friends or grand-parents je uses the ils (they) part of the verb for which the last two letters are always -nt (usually -ent), as in ils viennent-they come, ils habitent-they live.

2 Qu'est-ce que tu as fait en vacances?
What did you do on holiday?

It is important to be able to compare notes with other people about what you have been doing.  Holidays are always a good topic of conversation as there will have been new experiences, some good and some bad.

?Read Reference 1 which concerns the visit to Britain by a group of young people from the Parisian suburbs.  Not everyone is used to the delights of nature as this account shows!  The account is in the past perfect tense which is used to relate what happened next.  The verbs relating to movements begin with Je suis, On est or and the other verbs in J'ai, On a and ils ont  Pick out examples of each and write in your Notes under Past Perfect.  Remember you have to be able to use this tense to gain Level 5 and above.

3 Parler d'un voyage?
Speaking about a journey?

The first thing you are asked when you arrive at a business in France or at the home of your host family is, which way did you come, by ferry or tunnel, by the motorway or the mainroad.  You can then compare notes on where there were hold-ups.  It's as good as the weather for making conversation!

?In Reference 1 read Patrick's account of his family's disastrous start to their holidays in Italy.  Nothing went right!   Again the account is mainly in the past perfect tense.

?In Reference 2 (choose the page of train travel), you are asked to prepare a journey from your town to your twin townnavire or to Nice using the websites of the relevant rail companies. When you have planned the journey and made notes report back to a friend, giving times of when you are going to leave and arrive in the various towns.  On va prendre le ...... de ...... heures de ..... We are going to take the ....o'clock from ......   On va arriver ........   ..... heures   We are going to arrive at ....... at ...o'clock  On va partir de .... .... heures We're going to leave .... at ..o' clock   On va traverser Londres/Paris en .....  We're going to cross London/Paris by .......

4 Au syndicat d'initiative
At the tourist information office

France is the most visited country in the world by tourists with its wide range of attractions. Therefore there are many opportunities for people to work in the tourist industry. Nearly every little town has its own syndicat d'inititative which has the job of promoting the image of the area and keeping its eye on the quality of hotels and restaurants.

?Read this account on the benefits Laure is gaining as stagiaire in a tourist information office.  Notice that the account speaks about her in the elle part (3rd person singular) of the present tense (describing what she does regularly each day)  Look carefully and see what is the last letter of most of the verbs used after Laure or elle.  What do you call this type of verb?  Reference 1

?Go to Reference 2 and select Exploration Gographique/France.  This will take you to a new page where you should click on Villes.   Towns are listed alphabetically.  Select a town and find the entry for Bureau de Tourisme or syndicat d'initiative or other entry saying renseignements (information).  Find a) the cheapest room you could stay at in the town b) what there is to do this week in the town and c) What attractions the town  has to offer.   Report back in French.  a) La chambre la moins chre . .......... cote ...... francs.  b) Cette semaine on peut aller un (concert) une pice (play) qui s'appelle ......  c) ............ on peut visiter le/la ..............(chteau, cathdrale etc).
